Joy Kumbera
Graduate Student
I am a counseling intern at Chesterfield Counseling Associates, currently completing my graduate training in clinical mental health counseling. I strive to create a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment where clients can feel safe being themselves and openly sharing their experiences. The counseling space is intentionally shaped to promote an atmosphere that encourages emotional ease, relational connection, and consistent support of individuals goals over time.
Â
My approach to therapy emphasizes meaning-making, self-exploration, and personal responsibility within a collaborative therapeutic relationship. I draw from evidence-based practices while honoring each client’s unique values, lived experiences, and sense of purpose. I believe meaningful change emerges when clients are supported in examining their choices, increasing self-awareness, and engaging authentically in the therapeutic process.
Â
A central focus of my work is supporting individuals through grief and loss, including the loss of loved ones, relationships, identities, or significant life roles. I also provide general counseling support for clients navigating emotional distress, life challenges, and periods of uncertainty. In addition, I work with clients on goal achievement and personal growth, helping them explore perceptions, patterns, and barriers that may be impacting their progress.
Â
My primary theoretical orientation is existential therapy, with integration of Gestalt techniques to increase self-awareness, insight, and present-moment understanding. Within an existential framework, we explore themes such as meaning, freedom, responsibility, choice, and authenticity, while examining how these concepts shape one’s lived experience. Together, we work toward enhancing greater clarity, resilience, and alignment with personal values, while supporting clients in navigating life with intention and self-understanding.
